Step 1

The Spirit Jailbreak for the iPad is required for this work around. It’s the simplest and easiest jailbreak yet. I have been running it for the last 30 days and it’s rock solid. Head over to SpiritJB.com on your Mac or PC and run the quick install. If you need this spelled out for you, please see ReadWriteWeb’s blog post on JailBreaking your iPad.

Step 2

Once you are jailbroken, pull up Cydia and search for Full Force. Install the app and restart your iPad.

Step 3

Install the Facebook iPhone app on the iPad, if you haven’t done so already.

Step 4

Go into your settings menu and select FullForce, find the Facebook option, and turn the slider to “ON”.

Step 5

You’re done! Go into Facebook and your app will be automagically converted from iPhone to iPad ready.

It takes about 10 minutes at most for this quick and easy ‘hack’ to get Facebook running natively on your iPad and you will go from this:

Compliments of @BenParr from Mashable, we get an internal perspective on the Facebook redesign. They launched this update to 60 million users and Facebook recently celebrated their 400 million user milestone. Facebook has made a lot of news this week celebrating, their 6th birthday and launching a new browser based photo plugin.

The privacy updates are so slimy, they’ve prompted me to reflect on how I use the service.

In fact, Mark Zuckerburg (Facebook’s CEO) is touting how privacy isn’t a social norm anymore.

Well Sorry Mark, I don’t agree! I never gave my friends permission to control my privacy. And by no means do I buy into your corporate convenient vision that your users are throwing their privacy out the door.

To take back your privacy on Facebook, I’ve put together some simple steps to follow to put your profile in your hands, not your friends.

Following these steps will prevent your ‘friends’ from sharing your data.

Before you think I am an alarmist, consider this:
Apps are the biggest privacy culprit on Facebook. You may not install apps like Farmville, but your friends do. When you share your personal data with friends, you are also sharing it with your friend’s apps, AKA Farmville. So, Farmville or MafiaWars now has all of your personal information, if your friends are playing them.

If you limit what your friends can share, you are taking steps to control your own privacy. Facebook made it difficult to change these settings on purpose. The more open they are, the better it is for their budding startup. Unfortunately, these new privacy settings break the initial (unspoken) agreement Facebook had with it’s members, which led to people trusting them in the first place.

I afraid Facebook is probably too big to have the same melt down MySpace did, but if they keep this up, they might test that theory.

The first major announcement was Twitter Lists, which went live to all users on Friday. I agree with Scoble, Twitter Lists are the most significant upgrade to the Twitter platform since inception. Fresh on the heels of this announcement, Listorious created the first Twitter list directory site.

Twitter had a hot week. But they weren’t stopping there. Tweets from the Web 2.0 Summit were steadily quoting @Ev about the future of Twitter. My favorite quote from the show, “Twitter is an information network, not a social network.”

Another big move for Twitter last week was when they struck a deal with Bing and Google to populate relevant Tweets in search result pages. This was a clear warning shot across the bow of real time search startups like OneRiot.com.

In other big news last week, Google had their share of announcements.

Google Social Search is one of the more interesting developments from my perspective. Utilizing your Gmail contacts, Social Search finds results from your friend’s blogs, Twitter, and other social sites, and lets you filter out any results you don’t want included.

Google continued their string of announcements with the launch of Google Comparison engine which was released Thursday on the Adwords blog. This move, coupled with the Google maps redesign for Real Estate, is evidence Google is making a serious play in the Real Estate space.

And finally, Facebook:

Facebook made news with their homepage redesign last week. The move was prompted to give Facebook applications more exposure and relevancy moving forward. Users, as usual, reacted by forming groups that protested the new design.

Facebook also revamped it’s privacy policy, another move that sends shivers down the spine of their community.

Twitter made the most strides last week. Google was not far behind. And Facebook appeared to be mired by the diplomacy of their recent changes. It was a good week in tech news, with many substantial updates coming to fruition that will affect on the way we utilize these services.

Twitter astronomic valuation, combined with mainstream media’s crush on the service, means that Twitter isn’t going to roll up into an acquisition any time soon. It might even take several years, but I would be willing to bet their new exit strategy was focused on going public.

Assuming a Twitter acquisition is off the table for everyone but Google, what is still in play?

Twitter Search, and significant licensing deal at that.

Twitter Search is the most useful technology being underutilized by mainstream audiences, and you can expect Google, Yahoo, Facebook, or Microsoft (Bing) to try and change that.

Twitter needs to get their search data in the hands of everyone, not just early adopters. If you ask someone that doesn’t follow Mashable or Techcrunch about Twitter Search, they probably won’t be able to tell you how to get there. However, if relevant Tweets were dispersed through channels the mainstream audience already uses (such as Google), Twitter could reach new heights of relevance and popularity.

Bing, Microsoft’s newsiest search engine has been the most aggressive at integrating Twitter using their API. They have started to display Tweets in their search results, and they have even created BingTweets.com.

If I were to guess who is going to complete the first meaningful integration of Twitter Search and share in the revenue, I’d have to say Bing.

The others will try, but I doubt they will have a chance:

* Google wants Twitter because it plans to incorporate social engagement in it’s ranking algorithm. Google is also making a big play into real time search, but is limited by the Twitter API.
* Yahoo wants Twitter, but will probably have to sit this one out. They don’t have the cash, resources, or community support to pull this one off.
* Facebook has already went to the alter with Twitter and got jilted. I doubt they will be at the bargaining table for Twitter Search, especially since they bought FriendFeed instead. Expect them to just copy Twitter features (only not nearly as effective, and 6 months too late).

So, the winner of Twitter Search data will be awarded to Bing. They have the willingness, resources, and resolve to make something like this happen. I also expect them to secure this deal because they are the least competitive to Twitter (with exception to Yahoo). Bing does not want to compete with a ‘Google-Twitter’ mash, and I can’t blame them.

Bing has been very aggressive lately, demonstrated by their deal to take over the Yahoo search results. Could you imagine if Bing gets the first Twitter Search rev-share deal?

I expect this to end in a royal rumble between Microsoft (Bing) and Google, and the winner will get the rights to Twitter Search, if only for 12-24 months. Shortly thereafter, the serious IPO talks will emerge. This is reminiscent of what happen with Google search in the early days. Here we go again. What do you think is going to happen?

In July of this year, Facebook started allowing advertisers to target users on their birthday, a required field for signing up with the service.

Though I have no statistical basis for this claim, I can only imagine that targeting users on their birthday has a dramatic increase in conversion over traditional means. Considering advertisers don’t pay for these highly targeted ad impressions, only clicks, they are set up to drive more business than someone like Google (who doesn’t offer similar targeting).

Because you can hone in on users based on age, there is nothing stopping brands from advertising to almost everyone, for any milestone 16, 21, 30, 40, etc, everyday. Imagine Budweiser wanted to give you something on your birthday 21st? Wouldn’t you accept if it was properly targeted? I predict fortune 500 consumer brands will be vying for the top Facebook spots on your birthday, soon rather than later.

I’ve seen many people migrate their Google Adwords strategy to Facebook, and fail quickly. Google Adwords is mass marketing compared to Facebook advertising. Google knows virtually nothing about the consumer in comparison to Facebook. Where bulk campaigns successfully target all ages, interests, and genders on Google; they rarely have the same success on Facebook.

Facebook ads help you build stronger relationships with your sphere, but they don’t always drive direct sales. If you are looking to motivate your followers to share your brand’s message, you might start with hyper targeted Facebook ads directed at a Fan Page.

Now, wherever you stand on this, you can’t deny it’s big news.

Jason Fried, of 37 Signals, reacted by mocking Twitter with his own inflated valuation.

Other influencers felt as if this deal is resurrecting everything wrong with Silicon Valley pre-bubble.

I say it’s good news for this economy. With that kind of fundraising power, and Twitter’s not-so-secret desire to become the pulse of the planet, the race between Facebook and Twitter is going to get very interesting.

Some people aren’t comfortable with the growing comparisons of Twitter and Facebook despite their very similar traffic growth. Facebook has established revenues (and glimmers of profitability) where Twitter has experimental ideas on how to make money.

Either way, it is exciting to see and experience Twitter’s growth first hand. If you are not taking part in this media revolution, what are you doing???

When Facebook launched addressable status updates this month, they changed the way their users communicate with brands in a very powerful way. If, and only if, you are a fan of a brand on Facebook you can post addressable updates that link to, and often display on the fan page (if they have the setting enabled).

Here’s an example:

(1) I become a fan of SDBloggers on Facebook.
(2) Because SDBloggers lets fans post to the Wall, now anyone with the status update with ‘@SDBloggers’ in it will show on both of our pages.

This makes it incredibly simple to shout out a brand on Facebook, but only if you are their fan. I’ll say it again, @Addressable status updates are going to change the way users interact with brands on Facebook pages. I have already changed the way I use the feature.

From now on, I am becoming a fan of any brand I want to talk to on Facebook, for better or worse. I just might delete the trail for the brands I don’t really have an affinity for from my newsfeed.

I don’t want my friends to get the wrong idea. I am not a Fan of McDonalds, I just want to be able to call them out accordingly =-).

Okay, many of you know that I started a new gig over the last 3 weeks. Life as I know it, has been turned upside down, sideways, shaken up, and splattered everywhere. To say I’ve been befuddled is an understatement.

How am I coping with all the activity? I’m not. I am beyond email bankruptcy, Twitter overload, and ready to abandon my feed reader.

Not good.

Where do I go from here? Two words: ‘Spring Cleaning’.

I blocked off my schedule and took about 2-3 hours going through all my feeds, followers, and friends and applying Occam’s razor. Here is the result:

Twitter:
I manage 8 different Twitter accounts which all had the same strategy, follow and be followed. I was a big fan of Scoble’s secret to Twitter, but I am afraid I need to detract.

Twitter doesn’t have enough native features to sort and manage your lists. Sure, you can manage a list of tweeps via TweetDeck or Seesmic Desktop, but I find it rather inefficient to create and manage the same favorite list across web and mobile platforms. After much consideration, I decided to unfollow a good number of people I don’t have a personal relationship with.

The noise was filtering out the people I wanted to hear from the most.

As a repercussion of this new thinking, I took my follower count down to the people I maintain personal relationships with. I went from following nearly 1,000 people, down to about 200 and the result has been wonderful. My Twitter apps have been giving me more value than ever before. I find that my lists are much more manageable, the noise isn’t as deafening anymore.

I’ve done the same thing with Facebook. I’ve set up lists and limited the people that hit my primary news feed. Similarly, I reduced the number of feeds I subscribe to in Google reader from 300 to less than 100 feeds.

It was really challenging to limit my input streams to a couple hundred friends and influencers.

Less IS more. And that cliche is proving to be true once again.

There was one major announcement that came from the Facebook developers conference that I thought deserved to be amplified. I’ll keep this post short and sweet, and leave the analysis up to the pro-bloggers.

Here is what I thought was important. Facebook is fundamentally changing the way it thinks of applications and allowing developers to build richer integrations than ever allowed before.

Simple Example:
When you do activities on other sites, like Digg articles, or rent videos on Netflix, your activity shows up in your news feed. It is clear your news feed will become the central aspect of facebook and bring together all your friend’s activities from other sites. People are writing in depth about the subject here, and here.

The idea of the Facebook widget is dying. The era of full scale facebook integration is what’s to come. Facebook will become your home base for you and your friends’ web activity. Now the race is on to adapt your website, social network, and community to these new standards.

Facebook is a priceless database and their recent change creates opportunities for startups in every industry to build applications we’ve never seen before. This is essentially the beginning of web 3.0, if you want to call it that.

This is the very point where innovation of one, affects innovation of many.

Get the Red Bulls out. Game on.
