Jason Mraz reminds me of college, and my roommate Sam.

Sam knows good music. I remember Sam had an opportunity to interview Jason for the Daily Aztec after meeting him at one of his small time shows at Java Joes in Ocean Beach (since closed).

When Sam said I had to check this act out, I had no idea he’d be the mainstream talent he is now. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve always loved his music, but we didn’t see the record companies letting him do what he does best- be Jason!

10 years later we’ve come full circle. Jason is a big time recording artist, and he’s ushering in the new breed of opening act talent in Brett Dennen and Bushwalla. Jason and Co. are coming to San Diego to do a free benefit show for the fans that made his career.

The show will be free for lawn seats, and cost a whopping one dollar for floor seating. The promoters will be auctioning off 30 of the best seats in the house to benefit the Surfrider foundation. Charities will also be in attendance accepting donations. Carpools of 3 people or more won’t have to pay for parking.

“This has become a ‘pay what you like’ show in reality. We’ll give the show up to the fans for free, and ask them to drop in at the charity tables and give the non-profits the money that they think the show is worth. With no obligation to do so, of course, just a suggestion.”

There is a limit of 4 tickets per person. Tickets (both free and for purchase) will be available this Saturday, September 26, at 10am PST through LiveNation.com and Ticketmaster.com, and will be available online only.
